Fernando Zacarías, MD, DrPH 

Principal Mentor, Program Coordinator and

Founding Member of MultiPOD Mentoring

Dr. Zacarías is the Principal Mentor, Program Coordinator, and a Founding Member of MultiPOD Mentoring. 


Since 1987, he has helped dozens of students and young professionals (SYPs) advance their careers in international and global public health. Most of his former SYPs have been promoted at work or gone on to receive advanced degrees in Public Health, Economics, Political Science, Medicine, etc. or joined multilateral and bilateral agencies, international non-governmental organizations, or research centers and academic institutions. 


In addition to his role in MultiPOD Mentoring, Dr. Zacarías is an International Mentor at MentorNet, a Mentorship program of the Canadian Society for International Health; and Global Health Me, a joint Mentorship program of the Swedish Network for International Health and the Global Health Next Generation Network. He is also a member of the International Mentoring Association. 


Dr. Zacarías obtained his medical degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and specialized in Family Medicine (University of Miami) and Infectious Diseases (Emory University). In addition, he obtained his Master and Doctor of Public Health degrees (Harvard University) with a concentration in International Health Policy and Management and Tropical Public Health.


He worked as a Visiting Scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for five years, at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. In 1984, he joined the Pan American Health Organization, Regional Office of the World Health Organization for the Americas (PAHO/WHO) in Washington, DC. 


At PAHO/WHO, Dr. Zacarías was Chief of the AIDS/STD Program for seventeen years and subsequently became Senior Policy Advisor in the Family and Community Health Area; Acting Chief of Health Analysis and Statistics; and Coordinator of two editions of “Health in the Americas,” the quinquennial PAHO publication on the situation, trends and determinants of health in the Western Hemisphere. 


More recently, Dr. Zacarías was Director of Operations of Global Health International Advisors, a not-for-profit organization based in Washington, DC, which works on community health projects internationally.


Marcela Barrios

Founding Member of MultiPOD Mentoring

Marcela graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Political Science and International Relations and Affairs, and holds an MPH degree from the George Washington University Milken Institute of Public Health.


Marcela was a Mentée in 2014 and has worked for the Pan American Health Organization for more than five years as a Program Officer managing the regional movement, "A Promise Renewed for the Americas," to address health inequities in Latin American and Caribbean countries.


Alexandria San Jose

Founding Member of MultiPOD Mentoring

Alexandria graduated cum laude from the School of Foreign Service (SFS) at Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Science in Science, Technology, and International Affairs (STIA) and a concentration in Biotechnology and Global Health. Additionally, she received a certificate in International Development from the SFS.


Alexandria was a Mentée in 2015 and currently works at the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in Washington, DC as a Technical Officer in the Malaria Program of the Communicable Diseases and Health Analysis Department.


Clair Schaub

Founding Member of MultiPOD Mentoring

Clair holds a B.A. in Spanish/Latin American Studies from the School of International Service at American University. Clair has worked at various human rights NGOs operating within the Latin American Region. 


Clair was a Mentée in 2014 and is currently a Program Officer at the Pan American Health Organization working on the topic of Adolescent Health. She has experience in a number of areas including Outreach and Advocacy, Communication and Translation, and Program and Content Development.
